Grounded in The Art Trap

The Art Trap: Trap + Paint is a monthly event curated by our Project Associate Kuwame Kinsel. In July, with support from Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, he presented it to over 120 patrons at the seasonal Cultural Trust Gallery Crawl. The goal of Art Trap to bring individuals from various social, economic, and cultural backgrounds together to create a safe space powered by art, culture, and entertainment.

While out in the field, Kuwame noticed a trend of communities lacking self-care or not having enough disposable income to engage in self-maintenance. Understanding the importance of self-care, the event aims to provide individuals a break from the mundane routine of life that is to wake up, go to work, then going home to sleep or watch Netflix.

Hosting a slew of engaging amenities like a live DJ, clothing and art vendors, open bar, painting instruction and a community canvas painting for those unable to attend the duration of instruction paired with the centrally located Trusts Arts building in Downtown Pittsburgh provided everyone access to an engaging and creative outlet. This also provided the opportunity for those present to network with communities that normally wouldn’t be at the same table and expand their demographic reach for stronger community ties in the Greater Pittsburgh area.
