West End Lot, ReGen project turned Green Playce in partnership with KaBOOM!

Neighbors in the Pittsburgh community of Sheridan are rolling up their sleeves in preparation to transform a vacant lot at 1111 Fairdale Street. They would like to see the 35’ x 100’ lot be a well-maintained resource for children and residents of all ages. They envision an active sidewalk space with seating and a chess table. The open green space at the center of the lot could serve local home-school groups or yoga classes. The first phase of the project provided outreach and design assistance through Grounded’s ReGen program sponsored by The Hillman Foundation. Grounded held a neighborhood charrette in March 2019, and is currently working on a design and implementation plan.

The project received implementation funding through the Play Everywhere Challenge, created by KaBOOM!, the national non-profit dedicated to giving all kids the childhood they deserve through play, and Let’s Play, supported by Keurig Dr. Pepper. Together with the community, we will create this new, playful installation in Sheridan to help get all kids playing more! The project (soon to be renamed) will make it easier for all kids to learn and play every day in an unexpected place!
