Green Playces: Homewood

About Green Playces: Homewood

Our Homewood Green Playce site is located on Fleury Way, between Homewood Avenue and Sterrett Street. The site, owned by Bible Center Church, is centered around outdoor cooking, strategy games, food entrepreneurship, and artistic decoration.

Bible Center Church is an anchor institution in Homewood, and has been acquiring vacant buildings and land around their administrative offices.  In partnership with youth and the H.O.S.T network, we designed a space to give kids the ability to learn about food eco-entrepreneurship and the value of growing and maintaining your own space.

Design

Our kid-centered design process led to a few options for this Green Playce, including an outdoor kitchen, a space for educational games, and an art-filled space for imagination and adventure.

“Learning takes place inside and outside of school and in many places and spaces! [Grounded's] Green Playce is making this happen for children in Homewood. We are so excited about expanding after school programming to include an environmental education component. [Grounded's] outdoor classroom project is a vital step for moving our programming from the conceptual to the implementation phase.”

Final Design:

Green Playces: Homewood was completed in 2015, one of our first two Green Playces, along with Northside. Grounded and volunteers in the community completed the Bible Center Church’s Green Playce with 300 hours of volunteer service and partnering with 12 organizations. The site engaged 130 people, including 30 youth. If you are interested in access to the site for your group or neighbors who live close by the site please contact Bible Center Church.
