Earth Day on the Avenues

In Homestead there are more than 100 vacant lots and numerous other blighted properties, but also a blossoming main street, which is why it was an ideal location for a GTECH on the GO! event called Earth Day on the Avenues.

Earth Day on the Avenues was a day of service and celebration of the Homestead community that happened on April 25, 2015. In the morning volunteers spent time along 8th Avenue cleaning the corridor and enhancing public green spaces in the area, including the Amity Harvest Community Garden. In the afternoon, all volunteers and community residents were invited to join us at a pop-up party in an abandoned vacant lot along 8th Avenue. The lot was transformed a pop-up park full of food from local businesses, fun lawn games and entertainment from a local DJ.

The point of GTECH on the Go is to activity a space in order to show residents, business owners and other stakeholders in the community how vacant spaces can be transformed to public places. Our events are structured to encourage neighbors and friends to be able to come together and explore possible solutions for vacant lots in their area, while creating a casual, fun space that encourages open dialogue.

Special thanks to the Borough of Homestead and all of the amazing businesses along 8th Avenue for their support.
