Jazmary Morales is an undergraduate student of urban studies and sustainability at the University of Pittsburgh. She is from and grew up in Lebanon, PA alongside her two sisters. Being a child of immigrants, it is easy to see how our cities leave them behind, and I would like to change that. For her, GIS isn’t just a tool to produce maps about tree canopy distribution, heat vulnerability, bus routes, etc. It is a lens that allows us to see what is missing and who is being overlooked. Maps visualize those invisible systems and enhance our understanding of the world around us so that we can make decisions that serve every single person in our communities. This has driven Jazmary to pursue a career in urban planning to bridge the gaps in our cities and transform them into inclusive and equitable spaces.
