Green Playces: Hill District

About Green Playces: Hill District

Our partner Jeron X. Grayson Community Center.  The site worked with seven partners to complete the space that incorporates art, programming and space for community.  We engaged 62 volunteers to build out the site with 132 hours of volunteer labor.

Design:

We met with a group of high school students in the afterschool program and walked through some design ideas, then met with a group of Hill District partners to determine the final design of the site.

Working with the community and youth from the Grayson Center, we are finishing up building the site and expect to be completed in the coming weeks.

The site is culturally relevant in that Aunt Ester’s house is located next to our Green Playce.  Our team intentionally included aspects of August Wilson and his plays to reflect the importance of the site.  Our staff wrote a blog earlier in the fall to capture the importance of this space.

The site is complete, we are working with a local contractor to install a brick wall and concrete pad, where a local artist will complete a mural of August Wilson.
