SUMMARY:Makerspaces & Playces
DESCRIPTION:We had a fun night of cocktails and laser cutters for our 21+ Night at the TechShop to benefit Green Playces. Mingle with Makers\, Movers and Shakers enjoyed small bites\, engaged in maker-centered games\, and interacted with tool demonstrations that built educational play components for Green Playce sites.\nAbout The Cause:\nGTECH’s Green Playces initiative closes the gap between the lack of environmental education and access to safe\, vibrant green spaces for youth who live in close proximity to blighted\, vacant land by transforming vacant lots into meaningful outdoor making and learning spaces for STEM education and eco-literacy curriculum. SUMMARY:Green Workplace Challenge Kick-off
DESCRIPTION:The Green Workplace Challenge is back again for another year of exciting competition! \nBeginning with its first launch in September of 2011\, the field of GWC leaders completed over 5800 measurable actions\, saved enough energy to power 9700 average U.S. homes for a year (112\,000\,000 kWh of energy savings) at a value of over $8.9 million. Additionally\, enough water was saved to fill Heinz Field with over 93 feet of water (Over 67 million gallons saved). In terms of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions\, participants saved over 25\,600 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent\, which translates to roughly 651 airline flights of 500 miles: 4.3 days’ worth of all flights leaving Pittsburgh International Airport on a given day.  Check out the full details in the GWC infographics. \nLet’s build off of this impressive record by doing even more in this fourth round of the competition! \nNew this year (click here for full details): \n\nRevised Master Playbook with new actions\nEarn ribbons and recognition for your completed actions using the new category playbooks\nCompete on a neighborhood team\nEquity actions\nCompete on a team with other tenants in your building\nActions that reward tenant-landlord cooperation\nMore opportunities for innovative actions\nWeekly sprint challenges\n\nSpecial invitation to professional associations to rally your members to participate! \nLast time 100 businesses\, nonprofits\, municipalities\, and universities from southwestern Pennsylvania signed up for this yearlong competition to track and measure improvements in energy\, water\, waste\, and transportation. Hear how the leading organizations and their employees achieved success. See how they positively impacted the region\, from cost savings to resource efficiencies to an engaged workforce \nFull agenda to be posted soon.

SUMMARY:Circle Economy for Communities: Coffee with Andre Struker
DESCRIPTION:This event is free\, but we ask that you REGISTER to attend.\nThe circular economy is about closing resource loops\, mimicking natural ecosystems in the way we organize our society and businesses. Andre Struker\, Strategic Advisor to Amsterdam’s water utility Waternet\, is coming to Pittsburgh to share his expertise on how the facility’s energy-from-waste ecosystem fits within the overall circular economy strategy in Amsterdam and how the utility is “mining for energy” in its goal to become climate neutral by 2020. \nThe circular economy can be applied to help communities minimize waste\, maximize value creation\, and generate new opportunity for prosperity. GTECH is hosting coffee with Andre Struker to explore how these innovative principles can be applied locally with businesses\, community-based organizations and active citizens. During the coffee participants will have the opportunity to hear a presentation from Struker to dig deeper into the model and ask him questions to consider challenges and possible applications locally. \nThank you to our venue and coffee sponsors:
