SUMMARY:Integrative Design Workshop
DESCRIPTION:GBA is partnering with 7group to offer a unique half-day workshop where we’ll examine how integrative design thinking actively seeks to design and construct projects that are cost-effective to design\, build\, and operate for the life of any project. \nExperience: \n7group literally wrote the book on the Integrative Design Process and was integral to the design process of Phipps Conservatory’s Center for Sustainable Landscapes\, where this workshop will be held. This is a special chance to learn from 7group’s John Boecker\, an internationally recognized integrative design consultant. \nThe session begins by looking at natural systems as our model for whole systems thinking\, followed by concrete case study examples. Exercises help attendees experience how an integrative process can shift our mental model to embrace living systems thinking and move beyond mere green buildings toward restorative and regenerative design. The discussion also addresses how to neutralize first costs\, while achieving high levels of building performance. \nWe’ll ask questions\, challenge assumptions\, and unearth the unique purpose of each project team member in this interactive session. You are welcome to attend as an individual\, or as part of a project team. Building owners\, developers\, contractors\, trade specialists\, architects\, engineers\, and students are will find this information useful. You won’t want to miss it! \nCost:\nGBA Member\n150.00\nGBA Non-Member\n200.00\nIndividual Membership + Event Fee (member rate)\n225.00

SUMMARY:Inspire Speakers Series: Food and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:The Inspire Speakers Series is honored to host Stephen Ritz as we discuss the intersection of food and sustainability.  From the mountains of Colombia to the streets of Cairo\, Stephen Ritz builds global partnerships that bring the power of a plant to the world. Stephen teaches Pre-K through 5th grade at CS 55 in the Bronx\, and is the founder of the Green Bronx Machine. He was a Top 10 Finalist for the Global Teacher Prize\, and is one of NPR’s 50 Greatest Teachers. His work has been featured multiple times at the White House\, and a replica of his classroom was installed in the US Botanic Gardens. Stephen will be joined by farmer Karen Washington\, co-owner of Rise & Root Farm and a co-founder of Black Urban Growers\, as well as several local leaders. \nThis event is a collaboration with Grow Pittsburgh\, Repair the World\, and Chatham University’s Food Studies Program\, in addition to support from all  Inspire Speakers Series partners.

SUMMARY:Urban Hike in the Hill District
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Pittsburgh’s Hill District is a neighborhood rich with fascinating history\, green development\, and intriguing reuse projects? Terri Baltimore\, of the Hill House Association\, has led walking tours of the Hill District to scores of people\, including visitors from France\, Ireland\, England\, Brazil\, and Peru. Now she’ll lead GBA and its friends on a special tour of the neighborhood.\nWe’ll begin the afternoon gathered on the patio of the Hill House Kaufmann Center where we’ll enjoy beer\, wine\, cold lemonade\, and appetizers while Terri offers an overview of the community and some of its green and historical highlights. Then we’ll embark on the walking tour. In an effort to see a variety of neighborhood highlights along an easily walkable route\, we’ve identified the following locations as our stopping points. But there is so much more to see! So we’ll also hand out a list of additional stops that Terri recommends you check out in your own time\, in addition to those we’ll be hitting on the tour! \n\nHill House Kaufmann Center – Hill House Association is “the heart of the hill” and offers integrated community services including family and workforce development\, senior services and neighborhood engagement. The Kaufmann Center was renovated in 2010 and achieved LEED Silver certification. This rehab restored the majestic stairs leading the wooden doors. Additional enhancements – including a new stage\, lighting\, sound system and elevator – made the Elsie H. Hillman Auditorium a destination for performances\, lectures\, and other events (like GBA’s Inspire Speakers Series!).\n\n\nWylie Avenue Carnegie Library – This is one of six free libraries that were established with Andrew Carnegie’s original donation to the City of Pittsburgh. Carnegie saw libraries as “vital\, non-luxury assets to be supported by public dollars.” While the Wylie Avenue location is no longer used as a library – it’s now a Mosque – “Free To The People” is still carved above the entrance.\nCrawford Grill – Imagine meeting up with friends at the famous Crawford Grill and hearing jazz greats like Duke Ellington\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Dizzy Gillespie\, and John Coltrane. This local club was once known across the country as a destination for great music. While it closed more than 10 years ago\, jazz enthusiasts and community members are hoping to see it resurrected.\nAugust Wilson House – August Wilson’s childhood home is a project of the Daisy Wilson Artist Community\, a non-profit organization. Their purpose is to foster and promote greater appreciation for and understanding of African-American literature\, the performing arts and the literary\, artistic and professional legacy of August Wilson by transforming the August Wilson House\, at 1727 Bedford Avenue\, into a world-renowned artist residency and studio space.\n\n  \n** Space is limited for this event\, so be sure to sign up early! Children are welcome to join their parents on this tour (but remember it’s a walking tour!). \n  \nGBA Member$20 \nGBA Non-Member$30 \nStudent / EP$10 \nIndividual Membership + Event Fee (member rate)$95

He came to the Hill to get the music right.

SUMMARY:Grounded for Good: 10 Years of GTECH
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, April 21\, 2017\, GTECH celebrated 10 years of impact on the ground in communities across Allegheny County. We joined 273 of our closest friends\, partners\, Ambassadors\, and family at the Heinz History Center to recognize this momentous occasion and ring in the next 10 years. \nThe evening included good food\, company\, music\, and programming.  59 people completed our scavenger hunt throughout the Heinz History Center\, finding clues to unlock GTECH’s story. If you were too busy to stop at each station\, please be sure to check out our “Ode to GTECH” written by our very own Gavin White. Each stanza aligns with a year of GTECH’s history and major activities and one for good luck as we look to the future. \nOverall\, we raised a total of $74\,800 thanks to your generous support and participation – and we hope to keep the momentum going all year long. These important resources support our growing Ambassador network\, Green Playces initiative\, green stormwater outreach\, data collaboration\, and our work in the Mon Valley communities. \nWe look forward to the next 10 years and hope that you will be with us each step of the way. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Prev12Next\nPrevNext \n  \n\n\n\nFoundation Sponsors\n\nCultivator Sponsor\nGarden Paver Sponsors\nSeed Sower Sponsors\n\n \nMulch Spreader Sponsors\n\nInterested in sponsoring our event? SUMMARY:Inspire Speakers Series: Environmental Justice & Civic Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Overview:\nAt the age of 27\, Dr. John Francis stopped talking. A few months prior\, an oil spill prompted John to stop using motorized vehicles\, and his quiet act of defiance set his town into a roaring debate. In the clashing of voices\, John lost his own\, and took the next 17 years (no\, that’s not a typo!) to simply listen\, and walk. His feet traveled through Venezuela\, Brazil\, Bolivia\, Argentina\, and the US\, and eventually came upon the beating heart of environmentalism. More than 20\,000 miles and a doctorate later\, this Planetwalker has devoted his life to civic engagement and sustainability\, and understands preservation as the interplay of human rights\, gender\, race and economic equality.  Join us as we experience Dr. Francis’ Planetwalk firsthand\, and gain perspectives from Khalif Ali (Pittsburgh Foundation)\, Evaine K. Sing (GTECH)\, Joan Haley (Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows) and Jason Beery (UrbanKind Institute) about civic conversation in Pittsburgh.  We’ll even flex our own public dialogue skills at the end. \nAgenda:\n4:30-5:30 – Food\, Drinks\, and Networking \n5:30-6:15 – Keynote by Dr. John Francis and short introductions by local panelists \n6:15-7:00 – Facilitated Dialogue with Presenters and Audience \nMore About Our Speakers:\nDr. John Francis\nPlanetwalker\nDr. John Francis traveled by foot for 22 years\, and spent 17 of those completely silent.  When John was 26 years old\, an oil tanker collision prompted him to give up motorized vehicles\, a decision which spurred so many arguments that by 27\, he decided to stop talking.  During the two decades when he became the Planetwalker\, John earned a Bachelor’s\, Master’s\, and doctorate\, all while spreading a silent message of sustainability and social justice with his banjo. He founded the Planetwalk Foundation in 1982\, and upon breaking his silence on Earth Day in 1990\, Dr. Francis dedicated his life to creating conversation. \nAfter ending his silence in 1990\, Dr. Francis has spent his subsequent years carrying that same message across the country. \nHere are some ways he has shared his message: \n\nAuthor of Planetwalker: 22 Years of Walking. 17 Years of Silence.\nAuthor of The Ragged Edge of Silence: Finding Peace in a Noisy World\nRead an article about John.\nSee John’s TED Talk.\n\n \nKhalif Ali\nDirector of Public Policy & Advocacy\, The Pittsburgh Foundation\nKhalif is the Director of Public Policy and Advocacy at The Pittsburgh Foundation. In partnership with residents\, grassroots activists and political leaders\, Khalif works to craft and advance a policy and advocacy agenda for the Foundation. He has a graduate degree in social work from the University of Pittsburgh with a concentration in community organizing. When he’s not at the Foundation\, you might find him volunteering with the Reaching Back Program or coaching male Pittsburgh Public School students in health\, wellness\, nutrition\, exercise and meditation. \n  \nEvaine K. Sing\nExecutive Director\, GTECH Strategies\nEvaine is the Executive Director of GTECH Strategies\, which mobilizes residents\, policy-makers\, and like-minded organizations to transform vacant spaces into thriving places across Allegheny County. She is a registered landscape architect with a background in public policy and economic development. She has worked to engage individuals to implement creative\, sustainable solutions that can lead to larger changes in their neighborhoods. Evaine has also worked with partners at the policy and decision-making level to ensure pathways for change exist. \n  \nJoan Haley\nExecutive Director\, Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows Program\nJoan is the Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows Program and the former Clinical Director of Southwest Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center. With more than thirty years working in the non-profit sector in the fields of management\, adult education\, training and development\, she has taught leadership training and strategic planning to professionals and volunteers and is an experienced curriculum writer and fundraiser. Joan received a Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh in Adult Education and Training. \n  \nJason Beery\nSenior Research and Policy Analyst\, UrbanKind Institute\nJason is the Senior Research and Policy Analyst at UrbanKind Institute. Trained as a geographer\, he examines spatial difference from a holistic\, intersectional perspective\, blending political\, economic\, environmental\, legal\, and health issues with race\, gender\, and class. Jason focuses on a variety of areas\, including environmental justice\, community development\, food systems\, transportation\, and housing. Jason received his PhD in Geography from the University of Manchester (UK)\, his M.S. in Geography from Penn State\, and his B.A. in International Studies from Johns Hopkins University.  His research has been published in Political Geography\, Geoforum\, and elsewhere. \n

SUMMARY:Environmental Justice Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Acting Secretary Patrick McDonnell is hosting nine roundtables across the state over the next two months to meet with residents and hear their perspectives on environmental justice. \n“The Office of Environmental Justice fulfills a critical role within DEP – ensuring that all Pennsylvanians\, especially those who have historically been disenfranchised\, are fully involved in the decisions that affect their environment\,” said McDonnell. “Environmental justice embodies the principles that communities should not be disproportionally exposed to adverse environmental impacts. With these listening sessions\, I want to hear how we can improve on our responsibility.” \nThe tour will focus on engaging residents and leaders in DEP’s decision-making process\, and involving residents in communities that may not fit the traditional definition of an environmental justice area — which is based on minority population and income levels in census tracts. \nEnvironmental Justice Listening Tour Focus Areas:\n\nWhat environmental justice concerns are most pressing in your community?\nDo you feel that the current definition of an environmental justice community (20% poverty and/or 30% minority) properly represents the needs of your community and the Commonwealth at large?\nDo you feel the DEP is engaged with marginalized communities to ensure that they have a voice in the decision making process? How can the DEP be more engaged with these communities?\nWhat tools have you used to find out information on DEP permitting/enforcement actions?\nWhat ways can the DEP be more effective at sharing information with the public?\nHow can the DEP be more effective at receiving public input?\nWhat resource(s) is your community lacking that the DEP can provide that would assist in efforts to ensure environmental equity?\nWhat additional steps can be taken by the Department to effectively reach out to these vulnerable communities to ensure that their concerns are taken into consideration?\n\nThe listening sessions will take place throughout April and May. Additional details are available at http://www.dep.pa.gov/PublicParticipation/OfficeofEnvironmentalJustice/Pages/default.aspx \nLearn more about the Office of Environmental Justice. \nPress release regarding listening tour.
