SUMMARY:Urban Hike in the Hill District
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Pittsburgh’s Hill District is a neighborhood rich with fascinating history\, green development\, and intriguing reuse projects? Terri Baltimore\, of the Hill House Association\, has led walking tours of the Hill District to scores of people\, including visitors from France\, Ireland\, England\, Brazil\, and Peru. Now she’ll lead GBA and its friends on a special tour of the neighborhood.\nWe’ll begin the afternoon gathered on the patio of the Hill House Kaufmann Center where we’ll enjoy beer\, wine\, cold lemonade\, and appetizers while Terri offers an overview of the community and some of its green and historical highlights. Then we’ll embark on the walking tour. In an effort to see a variety of neighborhood highlights along an easily walkable route\, we’ve identified the following locations as our stopping points. But there is so much more to see! So we’ll also hand out a list of additional stops that Terri recommends you check out in your own time\, in addition to those we’ll be hitting on the tour! \n\nHill House Kaufmann Center – Hill House Association is “the heart of the hill” and offers integrated community services including family and workforce development\, senior services and neighborhood engagement. The Kaufmann Center was renovated in 2010 and achieved LEED Silver certification. This rehab restored the majestic stairs leading the wooden doors. Additional enhancements – including a new stage\, lighting\, sound system and elevator – made the Elsie H. Hillman Auditorium a destination for performances\, lectures\, and other events (like GBA’s Inspire Speakers Series!).\n\n\nWylie Avenue Carnegie Library – This is one of six free libraries that were established with Andrew Carnegie’s original donation to the City of Pittsburgh. Carnegie saw libraries as “vital\, non-luxury assets to be supported by public dollars.” While the Wylie Avenue location is no longer used as a library – it’s now a Mosque – “Free To The People” is still carved above the entrance.\nCrawford Grill – Imagine meeting up with friends at the famous Crawford Grill and hearing jazz greats like Duke Ellington\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Dizzy Gillespie\, and John Coltrane. This local club was once known across the country as a destination for great music. While it closed more than 10 years ago\, jazz enthusiasts and community members are hoping to see it resurrected.\nAugust Wilson House – August Wilson’s childhood home is a project of the Daisy Wilson Artist Community\, a non-profit organization. Their purpose is to foster and promote greater appreciation for and understanding of African-American literature\, the performing arts and the literary\, artistic and professional legacy of August Wilson by transforming the August Wilson House\, at 1727 Bedford Avenue\, into a world-renowned artist residency and studio space.\n\n  \n** Space is limited for this event\, so be sure to sign up early! Children are welcome to join their parents on this tour (but remember it’s a walking tour!). \n  \nGBA Member$20 \nGBA Non-Member$30 \nStudent / EP$10 \nIndividual Membership + Event Fee (member rate)$95

SUMMARY:Grounded for Good: 10 Years of GTECH
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, April 21\, 2017\, GTECH celebrated 10 years of impact on the ground in communities across Allegheny County. We joined 273 of our closest friends\, partners\, Ambassadors\, and family at the Heinz History Center to recognize this momentous occasion and ring in the next 10 years. \nThe evening included good food\, company\, music\, and programming.  59 people completed our scavenger hunt throughout the Heinz History Center\, finding clues to unlock GTECH’s story. If you were too busy to stop at each station\, please be sure to check out our “Ode to GTECH” written by our very own Gavin White. Each stanza aligns with a year of GTECH’s history and major activities and one for good luck as we look to the future. \nOverall\, we raised a total of $74\,800 thanks to your generous support and participation – and we hope to keep the momentum going all year long. These important resources support our growing Ambassador network\, Green Playces initiative\, green stormwater outreach\, data collaboration\, and our work in the Mon Valley communities. \nWe look forward to the next 10 years and hope that you will be with us each step of the way. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Prev12Next\nPrevNext \n  \n\n\n\nFoundation Sponsors\n\nCultivator Sponsor\nGarden Paver Sponsors\nSeed Sower Sponsors\n\n \nMulch Spreader Sponsors\n\nInterested in sponsoring our event? SUMMARY:GTECH's Entrepreneurial Spirits

These ambitious projects produce creative solutions and products to tackle social issues and offer new ideas for wide-scale change. As social entrepreneurs our vision is to help Pittsburgh become the most innovative city for addressing vacant land and community disinvestment.  \nGTECH’s Entrepreneurial Spirits event celebrates and supports our ability to trial new ideas and test innovative solutions for fighting blight and vacancy. SUMMARY:Circle Economy for Communities: Coffee with Andre Struker
DESCRIPTION:This event is free\, but we ask that you REGISTER to attend.\nThe circular economy is about closing resource loops\, mimicking natural ecosystems in the way we organize our society and businesses. Andre Struker\, Strategic Advisor to Amsterdam’s water utility Waternet\, is coming to Pittsburgh to share his expertise on how the facility’s energy-from-waste ecosystem fits within the overall circular economy strategy in Amsterdam and how the utility is “mining for energy” in its goal to become climate neutral by 2020. \nThe circular economy can be applied to help communities minimize waste\, maximize value creation\, and generate new opportunity for prosperity. GTECH is hosting coffee with Andre Struker to explore how these innovative principles can be applied locally with businesses\, community-based organizations and active citizens. During the coffee participants will have the opportunity to hear a presentation from Struker to dig deeper into the model and ask him questions to consider challenges and possible applications locally. \nThank you to our venue and coffee sponsors:

SUMMARY:Growler Hour with ioby
DESCRIPTION:ioby believes that it should be easy to make meaningful change “in our backyards” – the positive opposite of the “not in my back yard” mentality called NIMBY. To do this ioby has designed a crowd-resourcing platform that mobilizes neighbors who have good ideas to become powerful citizen leaders who make positive change in their own communities. GTECH and The Sprout Fund have been partnering with ioby to support innovative and creative projects that focus on current issues and challenges affecting local communities.
