SUMMARY:2018 GIS Class Registration Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now FULL\n\nClasses from March 19 – May 21\nCost: $500\n\nInstructed by Evaine K. Sing from GTECH\nA ten-week course to learn the basics of GIS technologies (Geographic Information Systems)\, with a focus on the industry-standard ArcGIS platform by ESRI. Classes will be held every Monday from March 19th-May 21st from 6:30-8:30 PM. \nThe course will cover: \nAn overview to GIS\, Finding\, Downloading\, Cleaning Data\, File Geodatabases\, GIS Outputs\, Map Design\, Spatial Data\, Geoprocessing\, Spatial Analysis\, Application \nWe will utilize lecture\, hands on tutorials in the program\, readings and application with a Community Project and Partner. \n\n  \nFrequently Asked Questions:\nWhat do I need?\n\nWe use the text “GIS Tutorial 1\, 10.3 Edition” by Kurland and Gorr. There are electronic versions available\, but this is a great reference book and it can be easier to have something to flip through when you need a reminder of what you’ve learned.\nA free trial of the software is available online\, but limited to 90 days which should get you through the class if you are looking to evaluate the system. I believe a 180 day trial is available with the purchase of a new copy of the text. Alternatively\, if you would like to purchase a personal copy of the software\, ESRI offers a personal license for $100/year though the text will still be required.\nAn external hard drive or jump drive with at least 2GB of free space.\nPlan to have your own Laptop and ArcGIS software for the course. The desktop version of this software (which is what this class will focus on) only works in the Windows Operating System. So\, if you have a Mac\, you can run a Windows virtual machine through your Mac or try and borrow a PC.\n\nIf I don’t own a laptop\, can I borrow one?\n\nThere are 3 desktops on location (with ArcGIS installed) for students who cannot provide their own computer but this means you will only be able to work during the class hours.\n\nWhat should I expect?\n\nThis professional development class is designed so that students can work at their own pace. We will work to get you familiar with concepts and tools during the class time\, and provide ample time to work on modules while we are available to help troubleshoot and answer questions. That said\, the more time you are able to commit to finishing the in class exercises and applying what you’ve learned in a practical project\, the more you will retain.\nEach year\, we adjust the class based on feedback of previous students to ensure you get a strong understanding of the system\, its potential for use in your field of interest or work\, and a starting point for data and analytics.\nWe work to solidify the individual lessons through project application – if you have a project in mind\, we can work with you to make that happen\, if you need a project\, we will connect you with a community partner who may need some support – as mentioned\, the more you use it\, the easier it gets and the project is a great way to apply what you learn.\nWe get that this is something extra and we want to make sure it is worth your time! If you have additional questions\, or need more time\, we can work with you so that you don’t get overwhelmed. DESCRIPTION:Spinning off from the successful city-wide Blight Bootcamp Conferences of the last two years\, GTECH is launching a series of Land Labs that will target the specific blight issues of a particular neighborhood. \nThe first Land Lab is taking place on Saturday\, November 4\, in Larimer at St. James AME Church – a neighborhood that is seeing significant development but is still dealing with high numbers of blighted\, vacant lots. Any resident or community organization in the city or county that faces the issues of vacant lot blight is invited to attend. We’ll be using Alan Mallach’s “Neighborhoods by Numbers\, an Introduction to Finding and Using Small Area Data” as a companion guide to the course. \nBy participating in the four-session learning circle\, participants will learn how to: \n\nOrganize and conduct neighborhood property surveys\nCreate tables and charts based on neighborhood statistics\nMake sharable\, interactive property maps using open data\nTie data to neighborhood redevelopment strategies and actions\nTell stories about their neighborhood\n\nThere are no prerequisites to the course\, but it will be helpful to know how to perform basic tasks in a spreadsheet\, including sorting a table based on the values in a column\, and adding new columns to a spreadsheet. It helps to have access to a laptop for two of the four classes\, and a limited number of computers will be available if you don’t have one. \nAll classes will be held at the Hazelwood Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Pennsylvania Resource Council (PRC)\, GTECH is hosting a free Rain Barrel Workshop for residents of Perry South/Perry Hilltop only. This neighborhood is part of the Woods Run (O-27) sewershed\, the focus area for the GTECH GSI project. \nWorkshop participants will learn how to harvest rainwater from their roofs\, store it\, and use it in the landscape. They also learn how to reduce their contribution to combined sewer overflow (CSO)\, flooding\, and polluted urban runoff by learning how to practice watershed protection and conservation in their own backyards. It’s easier than you think! \nPRC’s Watershed Awareness/Rain Barrel Workshop raises awareness of watershed issues\, demonstrates how to install a 55-gallon rain barrel\, and introduces other rainwater harvesting options. \nParticipants will also receive a FreeGarden RAIN 55-gallon rain barrel. DESCRIPTION:Moving from your Logic Model to an Outcome Measurement Plan: \nThis class will address how to turn your logic model into an outcome measurement plan.  Outcome Measurement is a process for demonstrating a nonprofit’s accountability and transparency that\, in addition to affecting programs and services\, can influence all major operations of the organization.  In this time of increased competition for grants\, it is more crucial than ever that nonprofits are able to clearly communicate their impact to their funders and stakeholders.  More importantly\, nonprofits owe it to themselves\, and those they serve\, to be able to analyze their programs and make improvements when necessary\, so that their desired outcomes will be met.  \nIn this workshop\, attendees will gain an understanding of the value of outcome measurements specifically for program managers.  They will become familiar with the outcome measurement process and learn how to implement an outcome measurement based approach to program evaluation.  Prior experience with logic models is recommended. \nThe speaker\, Martha Riecks\, is an independent consultant with over a decade of experience in the nonprofit field.  She specializes in providing services that allow small-to-medium nonprofits to clearly communicate the impact of their programs\, secure grant funds and measure their successes.  Ms. Riecks received a Master’s of Public Administration in Nonprofit Administration from the University of Pittsburgh and is a Registered Professional Fundraising Counsel with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Bureau of Charitable Organizations\, as well as a member of the American Evaluation Association. \nThis program is free!  However\, space is limited and registration is required by calling the Nonprofit Resource Center at (412) 622-6277.

That’s one of the reasons why we created the p4 initiative – to ensure that this new growth benefits people\, enhances a sense of place\, contributes to a healthier planet\, and achieves the highest levels of financial and social performance.” – Mayor Bill Peduto \nExperience\nSurely you’ve heard about p4 by now – the city’s new framework for creating a sustainable\, innovative\, and inclusive model for development and design which focuses on People\, Place\, Planet\, and Performance. Launched in 2015 by the Mayor’s Office and the Heinz Endowments\, p4 is meant to build on our city’s strengths and opportunities while ensuring inclusive and thoughtful decision-making around future growth and development. Layered with values like sustainability and equitable development\, the p4 framework will play a pivotal role in ensuring that everyone in our city can benefit from its future growth. \nBut how can we be sure that a model like p4 will work? Enter the p4 Performance Measures Project. Over 100 people from all corners and sectors of the city engaged in a year-long\, collaborative process to create a quantifiable system of metrics for informing and improving decision-making on public investments in development projects. Their work resulted in 12 priority focus areas for improvement – the 12 Performance Measures. Each Measure contains a set of metrics that together\, provide a comprehensive evaluation tool for the consistent assessment of real estate development projects in the city of Pittsburgh to advance sustainable and equitable development practices. These Measures reflect a first step toward transformational change in how we plan and develop for the benefit of all. DESCRIPTION:This event has been CANCELLED. \nJoin PWSA and residents of Marshall-Shadeland\, Perry Hilltop\, Observatory Hill\, and Brighton Heights at the Woods Run Community Meeting to discuss green solutions to stormwater challenges. \n\nGTECH is working with PWSA\, residents of the 4 affected neighborhoods\, Brightwood Civic Group\, the Brighton Heights Citizens Federation\, Observatory Hill Inc\, and Perry Hilltop Citizens Council to collect information on community preferences for green infrastructure and identify what other greenspace-related needs are community priorities. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael Blackhurst is currently a Research Development Manager at the University Center for Social & Urban Research at the University of Pittsburgh.  His research is robustly interdisciplinary\, drawing especially from engineering\, economics\, and statistics.  Dr. Blackhurst oversees applied and basic research and consulting projects in the education\, energy\, and environmental sectors.
