SUMMARY:Environmental Justice Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Acting Secretary Patrick McDonnell is hosting nine roundtables across the state over the next two months to meet with residents and hear their perspectives on environmental justice. \n“The Office of Environmental Justice fulfills a critical role within DEP – ensuring that all Pennsylvanians\, especially those who have historically been disenfranchised\, are fully involved in the decisions that affect their environment\,” said McDonnell. “Environmental justice embodies the principles that communities should not be disproportionally exposed to adverse environmental impacts. With these listening sessions\, I want to hear how we can improve on our responsibility.” \nThe tour will focus on engaging residents and leaders in DEP’s decision-making process\, and involving residents in communities that may not fit the traditional definition of an environmental justice area — which is based on minority population and income levels in census tracts. \nEnvironmental Justice Listening Tour Focus Areas:\n\nWhat environmental justice concerns are most pressing in your community?\nDo you feel that the current definition of an environmental justice community (20% poverty and/or 30% minority) properly represents the needs of your community and the Commonwealth at large?\nDo you feel the DEP is engaged with marginalized communities to ensure that they have a voice in the decision making process? How can the DEP be more engaged with these communities?\nWhat tools have you used to find out information on DEP permitting/enforcement actions?\nWhat ways can the DEP be more effective at sharing information with the public?\nHow can the DEP be more effective at receiving public input?\nWhat resource(s) is your community lacking that the DEP can provide that would assist in efforts to ensure environmental equity?\nWhat additional steps can be taken by the Department to effectively reach out to these vulnerable communities to ensure that their concerns are taken into consideration?\n\nThe listening sessions will take place throughout April and May. Additional details are available at http://www.dep.pa.gov/PublicParticipation/OfficeofEnvironmentalJustice/Pages/default.aspx \nLearn more about the Office of Environmental Justice. \nPress release regarding listening tour.

SUMMARY:Community EngageMINT: Fresh Connections with involveMINT
DESCRIPTION:InvolveMINT IS LAUNCHING ITS APP! As part of Pittsburgh’s Inclusive Innovation Week\, learn how technological pioneers are working to make Pittsburgh more inclusive and participatory through the city’s first digital currency. \nHOW: Come to the showcase! Connect with nonprofits\, see what local businesses have to offer\, and be the first to use involveMINT: a new mobile digital currency application. Please RSVP here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/community-engagemint-fresh-connections-with-involvemint-tickets-32638911864 \nDESCRIPTION: Within our 21st century economy\, innovation and disruption are happening lightning fast. Many of our communities find themselves lagging behind\, or unable to keep up with this dynamism. As traditional social structures\, funding sources\, and governmental safety nets are challenged or dismantled\, communities and the stakeholders within them all face unprecedented challenges. \nLocally\, Pittsburgh has gained high number of socially conscious businesses and organizations to tackle these challenges. However\, these organizations have previously lacked a means of connecting to the resources that they need most. What would happen if we could activate the local economy that exists in each neighborhood to help? The first step is to realize that we have all we need to thrive\, it is just a matter of connecting resources with those who need it most! \nJoin us to experience how involveMINT is activating these resources and encouraging cross sector collaboration in an exciting new way!

SUMMARY:For the Sake of All: Translating Evidence into Action for Community Health
DESCRIPTION:The University of Pittsburgh Center on Race and Social Problems is proud to host Dr. Jason Q. Purnell for the third lecture in the Reed Smith LLP Spring 2017 Speaker Series. Dr. Purnell\, Assistant Professor at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis\, and principal investigator and project director of the For the Sake of All initiative\, a groundbreaking\, multidisciplinary project on the health and well-being of African Americans in St. Louis. \nNo RSVP required; lunch provided. We know that poverty is not randomly distributed. Over a century of housing policy has gotten us to concentrated areas of poverty\, where we find more African American poverty concentrated into these tight pockets where poverty just accumulates\,” reports Purnell.

SUMMARY:p4 Performance Measures: In Depth on Valuing People\, Planet\, Place\, and Performance
DESCRIPTION:“We are poised for growth but cannot succeed unless we have a place for everyone. That’s one of the reasons why we created the p4 initiative – to ensure that this new growth benefits people\, enhances a sense of place\, contributes to a healthier planet\, and achieves the highest levels of financial and social performance.” – Mayor Bill Peduto \nExperience\nSurely you’ve heard about p4 by now – the city’s new framework for creating a sustainable\, innovative\, and inclusive model for development and design which focuses on People\, Place\, Planet\, and Performance. Launched in 2015 by the Mayor’s Office and the Heinz Endowments\, p4 is meant to build on our city’s strengths and opportunities while ensuring inclusive and thoughtful decision-making around future growth and development. Layered with values like sustainability and equitable development\, the p4 framework will play a pivotal role in ensuring that everyone in our city can benefit from its future growth. \nBut how can we be sure that a model like p4 will work? Enter the p4 Performance Measures Project. Over 100 people from all corners and sectors of the city engaged in a year-long\, collaborative process to create a quantifiable system of metrics for informing and improving decision-making on public investments in development projects. Their work resulted in 12 priority focus areas for improvement – the 12 Performance Measures. Each Measure contains a set of metrics that together\, provide a comprehensive evaluation tool for the consistent assessment of real estate development projects in the city of Pittsburgh to advance sustainable and equitable development practices. These Measures reflect a first step toward transformational change in how we plan and develop for the benefit of all. Implementation will require changes in policy\, behavior\, and practice that occurs over time. \nAt this breakfast briefing\, Rebecca Flora – GBA’s founding executive director and current p4 Performance Measures Project team leader – will share insights into the process of developing these Measures\, along with expectations and next steps for the city’s development. We’ll also take a deeper look at some of the Measures\, including Energy\, Connect\, Rainwater\, Air\, Innovation\, Opportunity\, and Design. \n Agenda\n8:15 – 8:30 – Arrive\, register\, grab breakfast\n8:30 – 9:30 – Presentation\n9:30 – 10:00 – Questions and Discussion \n\n

SUMMARY:Circle Economy for Communities: Coffee with Andre Struker
DESCRIPTION:This event is free\, but we ask that you REGISTER to attend.\nThe circular economy is about closing resource loops\, mimicking natural ecosystems in the way we organize our society and businesses. Andre Struker\, Strategic Advisor to Amsterdam’s water utility Waternet\, is coming to Pittsburgh to share his expertise on how the facility’s energy-from-waste ecosystem fits within the overall circular economy strategy in Amsterdam and how the utility is “mining for energy” in its goal to become climate neutral by 2020. \nThe circular economy can be applied to help communities minimize waste\, maximize value creation\, and generate new opportunity for prosperity. GTECH is hosting coffee with Andre Struker to explore how these innovative principles can be applied locally with businesses\, community-based organizations and active citizens. During the coffee participants will have the opportunity to hear a presentation from Struker to dig deeper into the model and ask him questions to consider challenges and possible applications locally. \nThank you to our venue and coffee sponsors:
